Refuse, Recycling & Landscape Waste

Arlington Heights Solid Waste Program is provided by Groot, the Village's contracted wastehauler. Please review general Information about the program as shown below  and in the Groot brochure, effective from April 1, 2017 through March 31, 2018.  Refuse, recycling and landscape waste is collected once per week. Residents choosing  to subscribe for twice-per-week collection must contact Groot by email at vah@groot.com or by phone at 800.244.1977.

Recycling & Energy Savings

Did you know that...

One recycled aluminum can saves enough energy to power a television or computer for 3 hours or a 100-watt light bulb for 20 hours.

A 6-pack of recycled aluminum cans saves enough energy to drive a car 5 miles.

Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to light a 100-watt light bulb for 4 hours.

Recycling a 1-gallon plastic milk jug will save enough energy to keep a 100-watt bulb burning for 11 hours.

Recycling one pound of steel conserves enough energy to light a 60-watt bulb for 26 hours.

Recycling a 1-foot high stack of newspapers saves enough electricity to heat a home for 17 hours.

Refuse & Recycling Carts

All refuse and recyclables must be placed in carts provided by Groot. The sizes for a refuse cart and a recycling cart are 35-gallon, 65-gallon or 95-gallon. If you are in need of carts, or if you would like to exchange the size of your carts, please contact Groot at 800.244.1977.

Cart Placement
Do not place carts in the street. Place carts 10 feet from parkway trees and mailboxes and 4 feet from other carts. Carts must be removed from the curb no later than 8 a.m. the day after collection. Carts may not be stored in the front yard.

Refuse Cart Program
Groot provides each residence with a refuse cart. Bags or disposable containers of refuse that do not fit in the refuse cart may be placed next to the refuse cart for collection.

Service Interruption

If you will be on vacation for 30 days or more, please call Groot to interrupt your service before you leave. There will be no charge for service while you are gone if you have called prior to leaving.

Single Sort Recycling Program

Unlimited recyclable materials are collected on your primary day of service. Materials do not need to be separated. Please review a list of recyclable items and how to prepare them for pick up.  A few reminders for recycling...

  • Do not place plastic bags in your recycling cart or use silver duct tape
  • Place all recyclable materials into your recycling cart
  • Flatten all corrugated cardboard boxes and paperboard/chipboard in 2'x2' sections, and remove any non-paper packing material
  • Materials that exceed cart capacity may be placed in a paper bag beside the cart
  • Contact Groot to replace a damaged or lost cart
