Maps & Property Search

The Village of Arlington Heights is excited to bring to your fingertips the useful technology of GIS - - Geographic Information Systems. By using the technology of GIS, you get much more than a map!  You can choose to view different "layers" of information such as locations of utilities, sidewalks, parkway trees, boundaries of school districts, location of parks and train stations, zoning information and other details pertaining to a certain parcel (sample maps). One of the most useful maps is the Village's zoning map, which is a detailed visual showcase of our community and its zoning districts, locations of various parcels and the complete street network.

We traditionally think of mapping as featuring roads, cities, lakes and undeveloped areas; with GIS technology on computers, mapping becomes alive with layers of helpful, public information that is of great help to residents, Village Departments, record keepers, developers, etc. With GIS, geography and existing data combine to create a visual representation of a geographical area.

The Village of Arlington Heights GIS Division has great information to share with the public. With GIS and the other maps available on our web site, you have information at your fingertips that can help you learn more about your property and about your community.

Benefits of GIS

Village Residents can use GIS to...

  • Locate any destination within the village

  • Locate any public services like police or fire stations, etc.

Contractors can use GIS to...

  • Virtually survey areas for potential development
  • Locate infrastructure
  • Create impact studies

Service providers can use GIS to...

  • Quickly identify infrastructure trouble spots
  • Respond to emergencies more efficiently
  • Plan reconstruction projects
Features of GIS
  • Visualization
A picture paints a 1000 words. GIS creates maps for many purposes. Examples include zoning maps and street maps.
  • Improvement of Work Efficiency
GIS enables the user to look up information quickly rather than having to request zoning or demographic information from the village.
  • Discover Trends and Patterns
Use GIS to evaluate changes in land-use, transportation and utility improvements.
  • GIS Technology Improves Customer Service
The Village of Arlington Heights provides a web-based GIS application to offer many more benefits to our citizens and visitors. Information regarding our system of streets, properties, parks, zoning, and other data is available to everyone.
Layering

Each piece of information in the map sits on a layer, and the users turn on or off the layers according to their needs. One layer could be made up of all the roads in an area. Another could represent all the lakes in the same area. Yet another could represent all the cities. The image to the right shows maps of the Village exposing some of the layers used by the Village to create its maps, depending on what information is needed. The data layers shown here include planning, public works, engineering, and zoning designations. Why is this layering so important? The power of a GIS over paper maps is your ability to select the information you need to see according to what goal you are trying to achieve. A business person trying to map customers in a particular city will want to see very different information than a water engineer who wants to see the water pipelines for the same city. Both may start with a common map—a street and neighborhood map of the city—but the information they add to that map will differ.

Printing with Adobe

Use the Zoom In Tool to magnify an area of the map. Use the Graphics Select Tool to outline a specific area of the map. Use the Print icon to print the area you "outlined".

Note: Printing the entire map may not provide adequate detail.
