Road & Sidewalk Projects

The Village of Arlington Heights' Engineering Department oversees the street rehabilitation, reconstruction, resurfacing and sidewalk construction projects.  Village streets selected for reconstruction are at a stage of deterioration where the curb and gutter is no longer functioning properly, there is failure of the street's subbase and the main part of the street is in poor condition.  The Project Engineer for the Street Rehabilitation & Reconstruction Program is Briget Schwab.

Village streets selected for the resurfacing program are in the beginning stages of deterioration. This maintenance program is intended to extend the life of the street. Intermittent curb and sidewalk are removed and replaced and the street is milled and resurfaced.  The Project Engineer for the Street Resurfacing Program is Nanci Julius.

The Public Works Department oversees asphalt edge grinding and resurfacing, which  is an intermediate maintenance step to help prolong the life of streets that were not scheduled for reconstruction. For streets to qualify for this program, they must be in generally good condition throughout the center lane, but failing and breaking up near the curb and gutter line. Those failing portions of the street are then milled and resurfaced with hot mix asphalt (HMA). The Street Foreman for this program is Glenn Adams.

Rehabilitation & Reconstruction Program

Streets selected for reconstruction are at a stage of deterioration where the curb and gutter is no longer functioning properly, there is failure of the street's subbase and the main part of the street is in poor condition.

Streets listed for this program will have the entire street removed down to the subgrade, including curb and gutter. The curb and gutter is installed and the new street is replaced with asphalt. This project may also require grade changes, so the driveway approaches are completely removed and replaced from the sidewalk to the curb. Additionally, intermittent sidewalk will be removed and replaced and intermittent drainage structures will be repaired or replaced.

Construction Updates as of August 15, 2017

Windsor Drive and Flentie Lane
The street removal and replacement has been completed up to the south entrance of Volz Drive.  On Tuesday, August 15th, Johnson Paving will place the first and second lift of asphalt on Phase 3 (North Entrance of Volz Drive/3129 Windsor Drive and Old Buffalo Grove Road).

On Thursday, August 17th, Johnson Paving has tentatively scheduled the final surface to be placed on Windsor Drive and Flentie Lane from the south entrance of Volz Drive to Buffalo Grove Road.  Prior to paving the contractor will place a layer of FRESH OIL at 7:00 AM.

Please note, that when first applied, the asphalt prime coat is very sticky and hard to remove from shoes, clothing, and vehicles. Walking or driving quickly on the asphalt prime coat is not recommended. In the event the asphalt prime coat does get on a vehicle, an automotive tar remover will remove the asphalt prime coat. The asphalt prime coat will also leave marks on your driveway if you drive through it and pull into your driveway.

Burke Drive, Redwood Drive, Briar Place
Concrete work is substantially complete.  The street removal stage of construction is tentatively scheduled to begin on Wednesday, August 16, 2017.  This work is expected to take 5-7 working days to complete.  Once a schedule has been confirmed, residents will receive a notification with more details.

For your convenience, we have provided a general sequence of construction activities for this phase of construction.  This schedule is an estimate and subject to change.

  1. Pavement removal, earth excavation and stone subbase placement - 3-4 working days
  2. Fine grading of the stone subbase - 1 working day
  3. First and second layer of asphalt pavement - 1-2 working days
  4. Prime coat (fresh oil) and final life of asphalt placement - 1 day (this will be postponed until other streets in the area have been completed.)
