Arlington Heights is raising the age of those who purchase tobacco products to 21. Over 30 communities across Illinois have changed the requirement to purchase tobacco from 18 to 21 years of age.

The new rules make it illegal for any retailer to sell tobacco, electronic smoking devices or vaping products to those under 21. Illegal possession of tobacco continues to be prohibited for those under 18 years of age.

The ordinance is effective in 10 days following the Board approval that was given on January 7, 2018. Police enforcement will begin 30 days after letters are sent to local retailers informing them of the age change to 21.

Retailers found in violation may be subject to their business license being suspended or revoked. Additionally, any person violating the new ordinance shall be subject to a fine of up to $750.
