Solicitation in Village

Managing Door-to-Door Solicitation in Village

Solicitor at house
With summer upon us, residents have noted an increase of solicitors going door-to-door. Solicitors must have a permit issued by the Village's Building & Life Safety Department. The permit does not imply endorsement or approval by the Village of the goods and/or services the solicitors represent.

It's also important to know that the Village does not use door-to-door solicitors to convey Village information to residents.

Pursuant to Village Code, all solicitors

  • Must be issued a permit by the Village before soliciting.

  • Are only permitted between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

  • Should wear an identification badge in a way that's clearly visible at all times while soliciting.

  • Should exhibit their solicitor permit when requested to do so by any prospective customer or Village employee.

  • Should peacefully depart homes which exhibit a “NO SOLICITORS OR PEDDLERS” notice near the main entrance.

Privileges for solicitation in the Village are granted due to First Amendment rights.

No Solicitor Signs
Signs are recommended for those who would prefer no solicitation at their homes. Signs can be purchased at most local hardware stores or picked up for free at Village Hall. Residents can make their own signs as well since no particular sign must be used.

Reporting Violations
Solicitors that are "aggressive" in their approach, or violate the permit rules and regulations should be reported to 911 if possible, when the act is occurring.

If you have a concern regarding solicitors, please email your complaint or concern to Valerie Gerstein, Permits, Inspections and Licensing Coordinator of the Building & Life Safety Department. Having a written record of your complaint/concern, which includes the name of the company the solicitor represents, is helpful in monitoring the actions of solicitors.

Complete Village regulations regarding solicitors can be found in Chapter 10, Article X “Peddlers and Solicitors” in the Arlington Heights Municipal Code
