Design Review Process

To ensure that architectural design and beautification efforts align with the Village’s overall objectives for high quality architecture and aesthetics, the Planning & Community Development Department handles the review process for Design Commission applications with preliminary and formal reviews. The Department review encompasses landscape design review to ensure a high quality and cohesive treatment of commercial projects. Projects reviewed for design and architecture are:

  • Commercial development
  • Single-family homes
  • Variance request for signage
  • Administrative review of single-family homes
  • Administrative review of commercial development
  • Landscape design review

For online resources to guide you through the Village's design and architecture requirements, please visit the Download Permits, Licenses & Guides section. You will find information on different types of projects such as single-family, commercial and sign variations. All projects require building permit approval after design approval is obtained.

For single-family projects, each Design Commission application is reviewed on a case by case basis to determine if it will be administratively approved by staff, or if a formal Design Commission approval is required. The approval process is determined by considering various factors like location, scale, context and design.
