Forestry

The Forestry and Grounds Unit performs the following general duties on the 36,000 Village-owned trees and maintains approximately 75
acres of public property:
  • Prune Village-owned trees on Village properties
  • Pickup fallen branches from parkway trees
  • Install rod and cable hardware into trees
  • Collect tree data and update Village tree inventory
  • Maintain plants and shrubs
  • Diagnose tree health issues and diseases
  • Perform Emerald Ash Borer inspections and outreach to residents
  • Inspect and oversee contractual projects, services, and programs for tree planting, tree trimming, tree removal, stump removal, irrigation, mowing and maintenance of Village properties
  • Plant and maintain flowerbeds and urns at Village owned parks and buildings
  • Maintain natural areas including Village-owned wet bottom retention basins
  • Restore parkways damaged by tree removal or Village utility excavations
  • Install and change decorative banners along major transportation corridors
  • Install and maintain holiday lights
  • Perform irrigation maintenance
  • Remove and replace trees and bushes
  • Install and maintain downtown decorative benches and trash/ recycling receptacles
  • Assist with Village snow and ice control operations
  • Assist with leaf collection on streets
  • Assist with special events, such as the Mane Event, Taste of Arlington, Tree Lighting, National Night Out, and Trunk-or-Treat
  • Provide educational presentations to residents on topics such as tree health, invasive insects, and tree maintenance
In 2021 The Village's Forestry & Grounds United Completed:
  • 5,952 trees pruned
  • 690 parkway trees removed
  • 587 parkway trees planted
  • 833 parkway restorations
  • 2,279 branch pickups 
  • 422 branches cracked & hanging
  • 807 tree inspections

This Unit has a permanent staffing level of nine (9) full-time employees and one (1) part time intern. Their responsibilities include:
  • VILLAGE FORESTER 1: Responsible for supervision and operation of the Forestry and Grounds Unit. Oversees all maintenance of an estimated 36,000 parkway trees and 75 acres of public owned property.
  • CREW CHIEF 1: Responsible for supervision of Forestry and Grounds crews and contractors performing tree, landscape and lawn work.
  • MAINTENANCE WORKER II 7: Operate specialty equipment and perform tree and landscape related duties for all Village-owned trees and properties.
  • FORESTRY INTERN 1: Update tree inventory and assist with ongoing projects. 

Forestry Programs and Accomplishments
